When we are in the middle of a challenging situation it’s easy to overthink and start assuming things. I’m an overthinker and an analyst so I’m very good with filling in my own stories about a person or situation when I don’t fully understand what’s happening.
I have to admit, I’ve judged someone based on my interpretation of their actions and realized it was just my own story, not the truth. That person wasn’t as bad as I thought. I felt convicted and asked God to forgive me for the story I created and the lies I believed about them.
I got reminded of this verse in the Bible, according to Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything, worthy of praise, think about these things” (New American Standard Bible). We need to be careful with the thoughts we allow in our minds. It is a constant battle to discern between my own stories, other people’s voices, and God’s voice.
I’m also preaching this to myself, before we tell any stories in our head about a situation or a person it’s important to pause and ask God if what I’m thinking is true before making any assumptions. God is faithful to reveal the truth to us when we ask Him. Sometimes our instincts are right, and we need to use wisdom in navigating those situations. But it is important to know the difference. According to John 8:31-32, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (New American standard Bible).
Some questions to reflect on:
Ask God to reveal any lies or stories you’re believing about yourself or others.
Ask God to forgive you for believing the lies
