Music is something that’s always been dear to my heart. Even as a kid, my sister and I always watched MTV and used to learn the lyrics for all songs and sing them out loud. Worship music has always been part of my family, and I grew up listening to hymns. As a kid, I was part of the choir at church, and my dad always sang at church and other events. It’s also no coincidence that I work for a company that plays Christian music on radio and other digital platforms. When I got saved, one of my mentors introduced me to contemporary Christian music. That’s when I realized that contemporary Christian music could also be fun, and there were some similarities to secular music. One of the first Christian contemporary artists I listened to was Michael W Smith, and I was also introduced to DC Talk, which I enjoyed listening to.
When I started to listen to contemporary Christian music, I did not make it a rule to listen only to Christian music, but I was drawn more to Christian music than secular music because it gave me so much peace. Even though music has always been part of my life, I was drawn more toward worship music only after I got saved. Even though I’ve always been part of the choir, worship music hit me differently as I began to lead worship at church as an adult after taking a long break from singing. A lot of times when I lead, I used to think that I was there to lead the congregation, but most of the time, the songs ministered to me more than anything. Worshipping in the form of singing or listening to music has so much power. I’ve experienced so much healing when I turn on the worship music. I believe so many spiritual battles are won when we praise and worship God. When we experience challenging situations in our life, it might be tough to pray, but it might be easier to turn on some worship music.
We sometimes don’t realize the impact worshipping can bring in our lives. The Bible talks about how the foundation of the prison started shaking when Paul and Silas began to sing. According to Acts 15:25-26, “Now about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them; and suddenly there was a great earthquake so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened” (New American Standard Bible).
Why should we worship or listen to worship music. These are just a few things that can happen when we worship. I’ve only shared some of the things I have experienced personally. I’m sure we can add more to this list.
1) Worship music brings healing
2) Worship music helps us remember all the things God has done for us and be grateful for that. According to Isaiah 25.1, “Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked wonders, Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.”
3) Worship music helps us remember who our God is
4) Worship music helps us to focus on God rather than the mountain or situations in front of us.
5) Worship music helps us fight Spiritual battles that we are not even aware of
6) God speaks to us through worship music
7) We can feel his presence
8) Worship music helps us look to our future with hope
If we are experiencing any challenges in life, we can always turn on some worship music even if we don’t feel like praying. Even though my focus in this article is on worshiping in the form of music, worship can be more than just music. I will cover that in future blog posts.
